Heartwarming Duck Hatchlings Bring Joy to Residents at Boclair Care Home
Residents and staff at Boclair Care Home in Bearsden have been treated to a truly uplifting experience this spring, as a group of ducklings hatched on-site, bringing delight, curiosity, and a renewed sense of connection to daily life in the home.
Engaging Residents Through Hands-On Animal Care
The project was introduced as part of Boclair Care Home’s ongoing commitment to providing meaningful and engaging activities for residents. Several eggs were carefully incubated within the home, giving residents the opportunity to observe the process up close and follow each stage of development.
A Much-Anticipated Moment of New Life
Recently, excitement grew as the eggs began to hatch, revealing the fluffy ducklings that quickly became the centre of attention. Residents gathered to witness the special moments, sharing stories, laughter, and a sense of wonder as the new arrivals emerged.
Karlynn Wheelan, Home Manager at Boclair Care Home, said:
“This has been such a special experience for everyone here. It’s brought a real sense of excitement and togetherness. For many of our residents, it has sparked fond memories and created new ones.”
Encouraging Wellbeing Through Interaction and Engagement
The presence of the ducklings has had a noticeably positive impact on wellbeing, encouraging gentle interaction, conversation, and engagement among residents. Many enjoyed naming the ducklings and learning about their care and early development.
Family members visiting the home have also embraced the experience, describing it as “heartwarming” and “a beautiful idea.”
The initiative is delivered in partnership with Incredible Eggs, an organisation dedicated to preserving biodiversity among heritage breeds and promoting non‑intensive, high‑welfare farming practices. Their work supports the conservation of pure and rare poultry breeds, some of which are listed as “at risk” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
